Cover-up Tattoo Berlin: Reworking an Existing Tattoo

You do not simply want to hide an old tattoo. You want to turn it into a convincing new piece. At BUGGKAT, every cover-up begins with an honest assessment of the existing work and the direction you want to take next.

We review what is technically and visually realistic, match the project with an appropriate artist and develop a custom design around the placement, contrast and existing shapes.

What is a cover-up tattoo?

A cover-up tattoo is a newly developed design that fully hides an existing tattoo or incorporates it into a new composition. The new piece must respond to the old lines, colours, filled areas and body placement, so a cover-up is not the same as applying a design to untouched skin.

Sometimes complete coverage is the right approach. In other cases, a creative correction, extension or integration produces a stronger result.

The most suitable option can only be assessed after an artist has seen the existing tattoo and understood the new idea.

Plan realistically

What determines whether a tattoo can be covered?

A cover-up is possible when the new concept provides enough visual and technical room. The decision is never based on size alone.

  1. 01

    Colour and density

Dark, heavily saturated areas limit very light or extremely delicate solutions. The new design must use the existing contrast intentionally.

  2. 02

    Size and shape

The new tattoo is often larger than the original so transitions and new focal points can be built convincingly.

  3. 03

    Body placement

Anatomy, movement and available space determine which composition can work over time.

  4. 04

    Skin condition

Raised, irritated or otherwise unusual areas cannot be assessed from a preferred design alone. Medical advice is required when there are health concerns.

  5. 05

    Preferred style

Graphic and contrast-led directions create different options from very light, minimal or extremely detailed ideas.

  6. 06

    Goal of the project

The plan changes depending on whether the old tattoo should disappear, remain partly visible or be corrected.

Cover-up, correction or integration?

Not every project needs the same solution. After reviewing the tattoo, we recommend the approach that makes the most sense for the existing work and the intended result.

Full cover-up

A new composition is developed to hide the old tattoo through planned scale, shapes and contrast.

Tattoo correction

Lines, proportions, shading or structure are improved without hiding the entire original piece.

Creative integration

Useful elements remain visible and are incorporated into a larger, coherent composition.

A final recommendation is made only after clear photographs and, when necessary, an in-person consultation.

Help us give you a useful answer

What we need for the first cover-up assessment

A complete enquiry reduces follow-up questions and helps the artist narrow down the realistic options.

  • One sharp, straight-on photograph of the entire existing tattoo
  • A second photograph from farther away showing the body placement and proportions
  • Neutral daylight, no filters and no heavy editing
  • Approximate dimensions of the existing tattoo
  • A short note explaining what should disappear and what may remain
  • References for the subject, mood or style of the new tattoo
  • Information about previous corrections or additional work in the same area

The easiest way to send photos is by email to studio@buggkat.de or via Instagram message — ideally together with your enquiry through the contact form.

How a cover-up project works

From the first photograph to the new tattoo

  1. Send photographs and the idea

Share images, measurements, placement and the new visual direction.

  2. Assess feasibility

We review the existing tattoo and assign the enquiry to a suitable artist.

  3. Discuss the approach

Together, we clarify whether full coverage, correction or integration is appropriate and what scale is realistic.

  4. Concept and estimate

The artist develops the direction. You receive an individual estimate before making a binding booking.

  5. Reserve the appointment

A €50 deposit secures the appointment and is deducted from the final price.

After the appointment, you receive clear care instructions. Minor touch-ups are free within three months when covered by the studio policy.

Why the new design may need to change

A strong cover-up works with the old tattoo, not against reality

The existing tattoo defines part of the starting point. Dark lines, filled areas and the original shape must be used deliberately within the new composition.

For that reason, the new tattoo may need more scale, stronger contrast or greater flexibility in the subject than initially expected. This does not mean that every cover-up must become a massive black piece. The right solution depends on the exact placement and existing work.

References help communicate the desired mood. The final design is developed for the existing tattoo and the client's anatomy.

  • 01 Use contrast deliberately
  • 02 Turn old focal points into a new visual flow
  • 03 Create enough space for clean transitions
  • 04 Match detail to existing areas and viewing distance
  • 05 Plan a composition that remains readable over time
The right artist

Cover-up experience and artistic style must work together

A cover-up artist needs more than experience in the preferred new style. They also need to analyse existing lines and filled areas and build them into a stable new composition.

After the initial review, we assign the enquiry to an appropriate artist — based on the existing tattoo, the intended direction and each specialisation.

KateU

Primary cover-up and correction artist

KateU starts by reading the existing tattoo: which lines still hold and which filled areas drive the contrast. From there she builds a new subject that absorbs the old contours as structure instead of merely hiding them. Depending on the starting point, a correction or integration without full coverage can be the better solution.

Katy

Selected cover-up projects

Katy may suit cover-ups where the new subject sits in fine line, microrealism, abstraction or graphic work. Whether the existing tattoo supports that direction is assessed beforehand from photographs.

Individual estimate

How much does a cover-up tattoo in Berlin cost?

A cover-up tattoo is priced individually. The estimate depends on the size, density and shape of the old tattoo, the new concept, placement, detail and expected session time.

A reliable estimate is only possible after clear photographs and the preferred direction have been reviewed. You receive a transparent individual estimate before making a binding booking.

A €50 deposit is required to reserve the appointment and is deducted from the final price.

Common questions about cover-up tattoos

Can every tattoo be covered completely?

No. Complete coverage depends on colour, density, size, placement, skin condition and the new idea. In some cases, correcting or integrating the existing tattoo is the stronger solution.

Does a cover-up need to be larger than the old tattoo?

Often, yes. The artist may need additional space for new shapes, transitions and focal points. The required scale can only be judged from the specific tattoo.

Can a dark or black tattoo be covered?

Some dark tattoos can be redesigned, but the available colours, contrast and subjects are more limited. A binding answer is only possible after reviewing the tattoo.

Can a small tattoo be covered?

Yes, small tattoos can be suitable cover-up projects. The new design may still need to be larger when this is necessary for a clean composition.

Can you tattoo over scars?

This is a separate individual question and is not the same as covering an old tattoo. Send photographs and explain the situation first. Medical advice is necessary when there are health concerns or unclear changes.

How many sessions does a cover-up require?

The number depends on the scale and technique. Small corrections may be compact, while larger compositions may need several sessions. An estimate is provided after consultation.

Can I walk in for a cover-up?

A prior enquiry is strongly recommended because photographs, feasibility, artist selection and design planning need to be reviewed. A spontaneous appointment is realistic only in rare, very simple cases.

How quickly will I receive an initial reply?

During opening hours, BUGGKAT usually replies within 30 minutes. Complete enquiries with clear photographs, measurements and references can be assessed more efficiently.
